How to optimize a Google Business Profile for contractors
Every guide gives you the same list: the right primary category, every field filled in, real photos, posts, and reviews you reply to. Do all of it. But the list is not what tells you whether it is working, so here is what it looked like on real listings. Base Basements, a Louisville basement remodeler, went from not showing in the map pack to number one for “basement remodeling” and “basement finishing”, and got two leads in two weeks. And on our own listing, adding a tracking tag to the website link moved 259 Search Console impressions from the homepage to the tagged address overnight, which looks like a collapse if you do not know why. The questions below cover both: what actually moved the ranking, and how to read the results.
How do I set up a Google Business Profile for my contracting business?
Search your business name on Google Maps first, because many contractors already have a listing Google created for them. If it exists, claim it. If not, add it at Google Business Profile with your business name exactly as it appears on your truck and invoices. If you work at customers' homes and do not want your address shown, set it up as a service-area business: you still verify with an address, but you hide it and list the towns you cover instead. Whether you need an address at all is covered in do I need an address for a Google Business Profile.
What category should a contractor choose?
The primary category is the single biggest setting on the profile, so pick the one that matches the work you most want, not the broadest one. A basement remodeler should be "Basement remodeler" or "Remodeler", not just "General contractor". Add secondary categories for the other services you really do, and nothing you do not. We go through how to choose in the best Google Business Profile category.
What does it take to rank #1 in the map pack?
Three things Google weighs: how relevant your profile is to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how well known you are, which mostly means reviews and mentions around the web. You cannot move your shop, so the work goes into the other two. For Base Basements, a basement remodeler in Louisville, that meant the right categories, a real page on their website for each service they offer, and steady reviews. They went from not showing in the map pack at all to number one for basement remodeling and basement finishing in Louisville, checked by hand in Google. Should I put a tracking link on my Google Business Profile website button?
You can, but know what it does to your numbers first. On September 11, 2026 we added a UTM tracking tag to the website link on our own profile. Within weeks, Search Console showed our homepage impressions falling from 166 to 41 in a four-week window, while the tagged link went from zero to 259. Nothing was lost: Google simply started crediting the map pack impressions to the tagged URL instead of the homepage. If you add a tag, compare the homepage and the tagged URL together, or you will think your site collapsed when it did not. Search Console also only counts website clicks from the listing, not calls or direction requests, so check the profile's own performance tab for those.
How often should a contractor post on Google Business Profile?
Once a week is a good rhythm: a finished job with a photo, the town it was in, and one line about the work. Posts keep the profile looking active to customers who are comparing you with the next listing. We cover what to post in how often to post on Google Business Profile.
How do I get more reviews on my profile?
Ask every customer, right after the job is done and they are happy, with a direct link that opens the review box. Reply to every review, good or bad, with a sentence that mentions the job. Keep your business name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear online, so Google is sure all those reviews and mentions are about you. More on asking in how to get more Google reviews. It is steady, unglamorous work, which is why a lot of owners hand it to us as part of our local SEO for Louisville contractors.
