Will a template website rank on Google?
The template itself does not decide that. Google ranks pages on what they say and how well they answer the search, so a template site with a clear page for "kitchen remodeling in Louisville", real photos and a few reviews can outrank a custom site with none of that. Where templates hurt is when they are left half-finished: placeholder text, a slow demo slider, the same stock photos as hundreds of other sites, and one services page for everything.
Should I use a WordPress theme or a website builder?
WordPress gives you more control and more ways to break things. Builders like Wix and Squarespace are simpler but lock you in. Which one fits depends on whether you or someone else will run it. We compare them in WordPress vs a custom website for contractors.
When a custom site is the better buy
A template is a good deal when your time is cheap and you enjoy the setup. It stops being one when you are on a roof all week and the site sits half-built for months. Our builds are a flat $750 to $1,500, and before you pay anything you can get a free contractor website mockup of what your own site would look like, with your business name, services and town already on it. Compare that to a $59 theme plus the weekends it takes to finish, and pick whichever leaves you more time for paid work.
The bottom line
If you want to do it yourself, a $39 to $79 WordPress theme or a builder template is a fine start. Check it on your phone, replace every stock photo, and write a real page for each service. If you would rather spend that time on jobs, see what a custom site would look like first. It costs nothing to look.
